Start Here — 3 Things Every Senior Should Know About Scams

Scammers target older adults more than anyone. These three rules stop most of them.

1. Real Companies Don't Call About Viruses

  • Microsoft, Apple, your bank and your internet provider will not call to say your computer is infected.

  • If someone does, hang up. Then call the company back on a number from your bill or the back of your card.

2. A Pop-Up With a Phone Number Is a Trap

  • A screen that flashes, beeps and tells you to call "tech support" right away is a scam, no matter whose logo it shows.

  • Don't call the number. Turn the computer off and back on instead.

3. Never Let a Stranger Into Your Computer

  • Don't install a program or read out a code for anyone who contacted you first. That's how scammers take over your computer and your bank account.

  • And no real business asks to be paid in gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or cash picked up at your door.

What You'll Learn

Every lesson is built around what you want to do. Here's what most people ask for:

Your Phone and Tablet

Making text bigger and easier to read, texting photos, video calls with family, and finding and organizing your apps.

Email and Passwords

Sending and finding email, attaching photos, and setting up a simple way to keep track of your passwords so you're never locked out.

Photos and Memories

Getting photos off your phone, sharing them with family, and backing them up so they're safe if a device is lost or breaks.

Online Accounts

Using pharmacy, patient portal, bank and government websites safely, and telling which emails and texts from them are real.

How It Works

1. Tell Me What You Want to Learn

A quick call to hear what you'd like to do and which devices you have. No question is too small.

2. Learn on Your Own Devices

One-on-one or with a family member, at your kitchen table or over a remote screen share. We practice on the phone, tablet or computer you already use, so it still works after I leave.

3. Keep Asking Questions

Questions come up after the first lesson. Call or email me and I'll help you sort them out.

Why Learn With Me

I know what scammers are doing right now.

I spend a lot of my time tracking down scams and cleaning up after them, so every lesson includes how to spot the tricks being used today.

I'm local and patient.

I live and work in the Hartford area and have over 30 years of experience helping people with computers. I won't rush you, talk down to you, or try to sell you something you don't need.

Questions People Ask About Computer Lessons

Do you offer in-home computer help?

Yes. I come to your home in Hartford and the surrounding area for lessons and everyday computer help. Once you're comfortable, we can also meet by remote screen share.

Do I need to buy anything?

No. We use the phone, tablet or computer you already have. If something new would really help, I'll tell you why before you spend anything.

Can a family member join?

Yes. Lessons can be one-on-one or with your family, and it often helps to have a second person hear the steps.

What should I have ready?

Your devices and chargers, your usernames and passwords (or wherever you keep them), and a list of questions. Jot them down as they come up during the week.
